Suburban Office Complex Is Latest Target of Union
The Carnegie Center is an office complex in suburban New Jersey that has found itself the target of New York City-based Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union attempt to unionize workers and reach contracts with the companies that clean office buildings. The Carnegie Center is owned by Boston Properties, a real estate investment trust, most of whose office buildings are in major cities. The offices in these major cities are already unionized, but the targeting of the Carnegie Center location marks the union's attempt to organize the less union-established suburbs. The union hopes that a successful organizing drive at the Carnegie Center will bring the union's New Jersey master contract into one more county.
