Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, the union representing Canadian rail workers, files lawsuit against return-to-work order issued by government
The Teamsters Canada Rail Conference represents the two largest railroad companies in Canada, and the union filed a lawsuit against a recent order stating employees were required to return to work. Workers at Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Kansas City went on strike after months of contract negotiations between the union and the railroad companies did not result in a tentative agreement. The Canadian government issued the order because the strike action resulted in significant disruptions in shipments and deliveries. Canadian National workers went on strike for one day, while Canadian Pacific Kansas City workers participated in a four-day strike action. The railroad companies proposed changing worker pay systems to an hourly schedule, while Teamsters are in favor of the wages determined based on mileage. The companies currently use a mileage-based system, and the union stated that changing the pay system would result in more dangerous working conditions.
