UAW members are likely to approve direct elections for leadership
Members of the United Auto Workers union are voting in favor of direct elections for their leadership. Earlier this year, a vote on direct election of leaders was part of a settlement to avoid a government takeover of the union after a widespread corruption scandal. Currently, leaders are chosen every 4 years at a convention by delegates picked by local union offices. If members approve direct elections, they will vote on leadership in June of next year.
