Wisconsin judge deems law prohibiting public employees from collective bargaining as unconstitutional
A recent ruling by a judge in Dane County, Wisconsin has overturned a long-standing state law that banned a majority of public employees from collective bargaining. Act 10, which was written by past Wisconsin governor Scott Walker, prohibited public employees in the state, besides police officers and firefighters, from negotiating salary increases greater than the rate of inflation. A judge ruled in July that the law violated the Wisconsin State Constitution, and the ruling earlier this week found parts of the law to be unconstitutional. Labor unions celebrated the decision, stating that the ruling gives employees a voice and allows for workplace rights and safety to improve. Union leaders expect the decision to be challenged, and it will likely be taken to the state Supreme Court.
