With a Hollywood Writers’ Strike Looming, Here’s What to Know
On Wednesday, approximately 12,000 television and movie script writers will vote online whether or not to strike. The writers have had significant impact on Hollywood in the past; the walkout of 2007-8 cost the economy of Los Angeles approximately $2.5 billion and stalled television schedules. The union representing the writers, the Writers Guild of America, is primarily fighting for higher salaries and for employers to pay of higher fraction of the union's healthcare. If a strike does occur, late night television shows would be hit the hardest, and shows scheduled for the fall would likely be delayed. Additionally, more viewers would likely shift to Netflix and Amazon.
